Patrizia Circelli, Project Leader of Biomodel4Regions, will participate in a panel discussion at the workshop “Bioeconomy Policy Making on a Regional Basis”, organized by the EU-funded project ShapingBio.

The workshop will take place on December 2, 2024, at the Sheraton Brussels Airport Hotel as part of the Pitch-Perfect and Boosting Connections event, running from December 2–4.

During the panel discussion, Patricia Circelli will represent Biomodel4Regions and deliver a brief presentation about the project. She will also share insights and perspectives on the development of bioeconomy blueprint at a regional level. The discussion will highlight essential strategies for fostering and accelerating bioeconomy innovation through effective policymaking and collaboration across different EU levels.

ShapingBio is an EU-funded initiative aimed at supporting and accelerating bioeconomy innovation in Europe. By enhancing the understanding of the bioeconomy innovation ecosystem and engaging key stakeholders, the project contributes to shaping policy recommendations and promoting matchmaking, networking, and knowledge transfer between regions and member states.

On October 2, 2024, the Fondazione Golinelli in Bologna hosted the Bioeconomy Marketplace Workshop, jointly organized by the RuralBioUp and Biomodel4regions projects. The event, held from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM alongside the IFIB International Forum on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioeconomy 2024, showcased the achievements of nine RuralBioUp regional hubs and six Biomodel4regions pilot regions.

Agenda Highlights:

The workshop was an excellent opportunity to connect with the ROBIN project and other key initiatives in the bioeconomy sector. The innovative use of the “marketplace” engagement methodology proved highly successful. Each region had its own dedicated space to showcase what works—and what doesn’t—in expanding the bioeconomy within their local contexts. This approach was further enriched by the sharing of typical regional foods, which were “served” at the marketplace stands, creating a practical and interactive setting for knowledge exchange.

The event successfully brought together a vibrant community of stakeholders, sharing best practices and fostering collaborations to advance the bioeconomy.

On September 24, 2024, Bioeconomy Cluster hosted a workshop titled “From Waste to Value” at the MIKADO Hotel in Nitra, Slovakia.

The meeting attracted over 50 representatives from various stakeholders in the  municipal waste management sector! In the bioeconomy, municipal waste serves as crucial biomass, yet it is often landfilled without recovery, leading to unnecessary emissions of harmful greenhouse gases!

The event aimed to explore effective waste management strategies in the Nitra region, including the use of quality compost and innovative circular economy models.

A special thanks to presenters, who delivered engaging contributions and fostered a stimulating platform for discussion.

As a good practice example, the regional model of Association of municipalities for waste management in Nitra region was showcased, demonstrating how to effectively engage the community and support infrastructure for successful waste management.

A key takeaway from the workshop is that the biggest challenge in waste management is #COLLABORATION. Together, we can move towards a more sustainable future!

As part of the Biomodel4Regions project, Bioeconomy Cluster team is working on a strategic document focused on a regional waste management model. We came away with many valuable insights from the workshop.

Our sister project ROBIN invites you to the 1st Mutual Learning Workshop, which will take place on October 9, 2024, from 09:30 CET at Steinbeis Europa Zentrum, Leuschnerstr. 43, Stuttgart, Germany.

This workshop aims to present the ROBIN Toolbox and bring together European regional authorities and their stakeholders interested in finding out which tools they can use to support regional bioeconomy governance. During the event, they will explore the ROBIN Toolbox and other bioeconomy tools as well as discuss strategies to foster circular bioeconomy. Where one of the tools is our bioeconomy strategy methodology.

Short description of the event:
INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOECONOMY 2024

IFIB is the International Forum on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioeconomy which will take place on October 3-4 in Bologna (Italy). Participants will come from Europe and beyond to find potential partners for collaborations, business development, licensing agreements, joint ventures, research projects, exchange of experiences and partnership opportunities.

In Mid-August a regional strategic co-creation workshop organized by BioFuel Region in collaboration with RISE, took place in Örnsköldsvik, northern Sweden. The purpose was to bring together different stakeholders in the bioeconomy sector to jointly discuss the proposal for the Swedish bioeconomy strategy, the priorities that were highlighted reflect what is important from our regional perspective. This was one of the steps towards the project’s upcoming bioeconomy blueprint.

During the day Hans Nilsagård form The Government Office participated and reviewed the proposal’s mandate, goal statements and proposed measures. He also answered questions from the interested stakeholders which was represented by regional authorities, Research & Development and companies. Together we analyzed the proposals and provided opinions based on northern Sweden’s conditions and perspective.

“This is a good model of how to engage stakeholders by linking ongoing national work of a bioeconomy governance model with the regional process of the project. Working together, from different sectors provides complementary knowledge and perspectives, which allows us to identify where the gaps, but also the possibilities, lie and thereby formulate cross-sectorial measures for transforming into a sustainable bioeconomy”, says Eleonora Borén, innovations- och processledare, RISE.

What is a bio-based strategy blueprint?

The project will deliver six regional bio-based economy strategy blueprints, one by each pilot region. It will contain the methodology for each of the relevant analysis/outcomes of the project, as well as success factors and limitations. To be used by regions and their clusters to further develop their bio-based economy, working towards to a regional strategy in the long-term.

One of the regions is Northen Sweden, and the discussions during the workshop can be summarized like this: we have renewable resources together with traditional and research-based knowledge and we will contribute to the national bioeconomy goals. What we need are supportive policy instruments, reduced investment risks and support for community building.

The event will take place in Bologna, Italy, at Fondazione Golinelli on October 2, 2024, from 14:30 to 17:30, back to back with the IFIB International Forum on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioeconomy 2024.

This workshop is designed as a marketplace to showcase the achievements of nine  RuralBioUp regional hubs and six Biomodel4regions pilot regions. Participants will have the opportunity to explore key results and outputs through engaging poster presentations, highlighting innovative local bioeconomy strategies and action plans to promote bioeconomy at a local level.

TheWorkshop is a collaborative initiative by the RuralBioUp and Biomodel4regions projects.

Last week, the BIOMODEL4REGIONS consortium meet in Kozani, Greece. Eight partners shared the work done over the past six months and discussed how the work will continue in the coming year. Currently, the project are developing six regional bio-based economy strategy blueprints, which will be a major focus of our efforts this fall.

We also had the opportunity to listen to a presentation of the MarginUp! project by Greenovate, ATB, and CluBE. The presentation providing valuable insights and fostering collaboration.

It is always inspiring and enjoyable to meet the people involved in the project. We learn from each other and share ideas and thoughts about the project’s continuation. One thing we know for sure is that we are moving full speed ahead!

Last week Biomodel4Regions project coordinator Patrizia Circelli attended CBE JU Info Day in Brussels. To gain insights into the CBE JU 2024 call for project proposals and spread the word about the project.

“It was very interesting to join the CBE event, where it was possible to gain further insights about the upcoming calls on bioeconomy & agrifood, since these are burning and challenging topics where it is instrumental to connect to key stakeholders, and liase with strategic partners,” says Patrizia Circelli.
